The salary for this permanent Ward Manager job is £48,572 - £54,250 per annum.
Main Duties:
- Effectively oversees ward operations and resource allocation, ensuring optimal staffing levels and a balanced mix of nursing skills and experience. This includes managing rotas, coordinating annual leave, and arranging necessary training.
- Maintains full oversight of nursing staff scheduling as the primary authority for rota management, ensuring that rostering standards are upheld and effective.
- Ensures clinical supervision, appraisals, and CPD (Continuing Professional Development) requirements are met for all nursing staff, including the completion of mandatory training.
- Identifies and addresses gaps in development, ensuring that any training or performance issues are promptly resolved.
- Recognises and rewards nursing staff for positive performance, aligning recognition with their roles and responsibilities.
- Acts as a visible role model, mentor, and leader, fostering a culture of learning, development, inquiry, and professionalism. Promotes the sharing of achievements and lessons learned to benefit the ward, hospital, and broader division.
- Implements and monitors compliance with relevant policies and statutory requirements at the hospital, division, and group levels.
- Ensures the highest standard of patient care, taking appropriate action to maintain quality care at all times.
- Guarantees that all patients have clear, current, and evidence-based care plans that reflect their personalised needs, with appropriate engagement of family members and carers.
- Establishes clear procedures and processes to ensure the safe and effective operation of the ward, including patient nutrition, environmental cleanliness, and the use of quality assessment tools.
- Actively participates in the recruitment and retention of staff for the ward and hospital.
- Ensures accurate and prompt communication of patient-related information, including clinical communication, records, handovers, and reports.
- Develops and maintains strong working relationships with both clinical and non-clinical colleagues, promoting effective collaboration.
- Ensures comprehensive management of patients' physical healthcare needs, alongside their mental health and psychological care.
- Promotes and upholds diversity and equality requirements within the ward.
- Conducts thorough and timely clinical and HR investigations, including handling complaints, ensuring high standards are maintained.
- Ensures compliance with legislative frameworks, such as the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and Deprivation of Liberty, in line with company policy and national standards.
- Manages Medicines Management within the clinical area/ward, ensuring that all registered nurses undergo competency-based assessments during induction and fostering a transparent approach to managing medication errors.
- Oversees incident reporting and corrective actions, engaging staff in the process and ensuring timely debriefs following incidents.
- Works closely with the Ward MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) to facilitate positive and efficient team collaboration.
- Deputises for the Director of Clinical Services as needed, assuming leadership responsibilities in their absence.
Requirements of the Ward Manager:
- Registered Nurse (RN) Qualification: A valid nursing qualification, as well as registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or an equivalent body.
- Clinical Experience: Significant experience as a registered nurse.
- Leadership Experience: Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a clinical setting, such as a Charge Nurse or Deputy Ward Manager, is typically required.
