VGC Group Lowestoft are delighted to be recruiting for a Pit Top / Slinger Signaller for a site based in Lowestoft. 

 

Purpose of the Role:

Reporting to the Works Manager, Work Superintendent, Pit Boss and Crane Supervisor the purpose of your role will be:

To work with the Crane Supervisor and operator to supervise and direct from the Pit Top during lifting operations. This will involve constant communication with the Pit Bottom to ensure safe lifting with no personnel entering beneath suspended loads.

To work with the Pit Bottom chargehand to supervise and maintain the safe operation of the pit bottom, including the tunnel eye, following BS6164, Government Legislation and Company policy.

 

Accountabilities:

To be briefed by the Crane Supervisor to ensure that the safe system of work described in the approved lift plan is understood.

No lifts are to be undertaken if they are not included in an approved lift plan and briefed by the crane supervisor.

As a Slinger Signaller you should have a thorough understanding of all the different lifting equipment available, the features of each and how they are to be safely used and use them accordingly.

It is the Slinger Signaller's responsibility to look out for any potential hazards that may compromise the safety of carrying out the lifting operation and alert the Crane Operator to them.

Communications between the Slinger Signaller and the Crane Operator are usually carried out using hand signals as laid out in BS 7121 but can be carried out through the site radios as instructed by the Crane Supervisor.

The Slinger Signaller has the authority to halt lifting operations if they believe that conditions are too hazardous to safely continue with lifting operations.

Maintain good working relations with the Client, Engineers and together with the Supply Chain.

  • Report all accidents, incidents and near misses to their line Manager or Health and Safety Manager as appropriate
  • Report damage to plant and equipment to their immediate supervisor
  • Use only the plant and equipment for which they have received training and authorisation
  • Use and look after the protective equipment provided and report to their Supervisor when it becomes worn or defective
  • Ensure that any personal injuries are recorded in the accident book
  • Propose to your immediate Supervisor ways of eliminating hazards and improving safety at their workplace
  • Attend Health surveillance when instructed
  • Set a personal example of safe behaviour

Actively participate in the identification of Environmental hazards and implement site control and preventive measures

Act in the best interests of the Project in all dealings with the Client, Suppliers, Workforce and the public

Commercial:

Read procedures and guidance and receive explanation/discussion from Crane Supervisor, Appointed Person for Lifting, Pit Boss, Works Manager, Works Superintendent & Engineers

Personal Qualities and Experience:

You must have relevant experience as a Pit Top / Slinger Signaller with a log book or similar record previous Slinger / Signaller duties

Undertake Project/Contract specific induction provided by the Principal Contractor.

Nuclear projects:

Security clearance for the project (BPSS) and preferably Nuclear site experience and behavioural safety training

Must hold a valid suitable grade of CPCS card, behavioural safety training and hold certificates/training below:

  • Undertake Project/Contract specific induction provided by the Principal Contractor
  • CPCS (Red or Blue)
  • CPCS Technical Test A40 - Practical & Theory (mapped to the learning outcomes, achievement of a Red CPCS card follows the successful completion of the full Technical Test), or Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations - Slinger/Signaller (achievement of a Blue CPCS card follows achievement of NVQ)
  • TSTS (if not held, to be completed before working in Tunnelling Environment)
  • C&G Tunnel Entry & Emergency Procedures (if not held, to be completed before working in Tunnelling Environment)
  • Nuclear projects: 

 

Experience and knowledge: 

Successful experience at Slinger Signaller Level

Working knowledge of requirements of Legislation, Regulations and Codes of Practice that relate to all types of lifting duties including basic, standard and complex, typically BS 7121: Code of Practice for Safe Use of Cranes

Experience of maintaining good relations with the Client.

Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with team members under time pressures

Knowledge of Government Legislation and Company policy on all matters relating to safety and environment

Knowledge of BS6164 - desirable

Knowledge of Construction procedures and working methods

Must keep a logbook or similar of Slinger/Signaller duties

 

Target Qualifications: NVQ Level 2 in Tunnelling Operations - (desirable when working in tunnels)
