Main purpose of the role:

  • The Violence Reduction Team brings together professionals from the local authority, health services and the police to provide a multi-agency approach to breaking the cycle of involvement in violence; both as victims and as perpetrators.
  • The post holder will assist in the prevention and reduction of crime in Lewisham through case management of individuals with identified mental health issues who have perpetrated or are at risk of violence and struggle to access/engage in mental health services. This will include assessment, report preparation, intervention, case planning and review, as appropriate to the work of the team and service unit.

Main duties/responsibilities:

  • Take responsibility for a caseload of clients including undertaking initial engagement, assessment of risk, needs and providing support in accessing appropriate services.
  • Undertake and facilitate evidence-based interventions that aim to reduce reoffending, utilising current best practice including a knowledge and understanding of the trauma recovery model and restorative approaches.
  • Facilitate service user access and engagement with required mental health services in order to support prevention/recovery.
  • Undertake the development of individual re-integration plans to meet the needs of offenders. Ensure that needs identified are monitored through the individual action plans and reviewed at regular intervals.
  • Identify a network of agencies and services that will support offenders in the community, with emphasis on addressing the individual needs for education, training, employment, accommodation and health support.
  • Facilitate multi agency meetings to manage risk, and identify lead professionals for each service user where appropriate
  • Provide advocacy and support that will facilitate the personal and social development of service users of the project.
  • Ensure that up to date records of the progress of individual clients are maintained.
  • Prepare reports as required.
  • Case manage service users within the community setting through a range and variety of creative and timely interventions ensuring that compliance with legislative requirements,   statutory national standards, local policy and protocols, practice directives.
  • Work with complex and potentially dangerous and vulnerable people.

 

Requirements of the Mental Health Link Violence Reduction Officer:

  • Knowledge of criminal justice legislation particularly the Crime and Disorder Act.
  • Also related fields including ETE, housing linked to criminogenic need
  • Knowledge of equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice and their importance in working with perpetrators and victims in a risk based environment.
  • Knowledge of good practice in the support and resettlement of perpetrators and support for victims
  • Strong experience in working with young people that display mental health concerns with an ability to create positive relationship.
  • Experience of delivering interventions to address the resettlement needs of perpetrators, victims or other vulnerable adults
  • Strong and detailed experience in risk assessment and risk management skills.
